This is a new outreach program and as such, this section of our website is still under development.

In addition to our outreach efforts through our Environmental Stewardship programs, we are currently working with other organizations to help in town high school youth experience and learn about the great outdoors. The students are forming a new outdoor and environmental club. Hotlanta Adventures is assisting in the planning and implementation of various outdoor recreational outings several times a year which will include an educational component.

Hotlanta Adventures and our partners have identified good stewardship of the natural environment as a primary goal. We believe that environmental education plays a critical role in achieving this goal. Therefore, not only will the students have the opportunity to participate in new and exciting adventures, but they will, at the same time, be learning about their natural surroundings, how to care for and maintain their environment, and how to improve the quality of their environment for future generations.

Our first outing on December 13, 2006 included a Cookout and Day Hike at Sweetwater Creek State Park. The guided hike was led by a Interpretative Park Ranger in which students learned about the ecology and history of the park, the old New Manchester town, and the New Manchester Manufacturing Company. There was also a tour of the new Visitors Center which also included a presentation about the green building features of this environmentally friendly building. About 40 students participated in this event.

Other proposed outings are to include:

  • Day Outing to the Blue Ridge Mountains in Dahlonega to go horseback riding and visit the Gold Mining Museum. Students will also conduct Adopt-A-Stream water testing while at the horse farm.

  • Overnight outing going caving/spelunking in the TAG (TN, AL, GA) caving region. Students will lean about cave geology.

  • Overnight camping outing and whitewater rafting weekend.

We hope to make this a model program that we can implement in other schools in the Metro Atlanta area.
